FA Cup Competition

The first FA cup competition in Nigeria wsa held in 1945 and was won by the Red Devils of Portharcourt.
The Fa cup is currently being competed by over 300 clubs in the country. All interested clubs are required to register for the competition with their state FAs. State preliminaries are organised and played to eliminate some of the clubs at that level. The state finals are played to produce the winner of the trophy, but both the winner and the runners up go ahead to represent thier state at the national competition.

Therefore national preliminaries are played with 72 clubs representing the 36 states of the federation. The preliminaries are played on league basis after the clubs have been divided into different zones usually 8 zones. At the end of the preliminaries, 16 clubs will be qualified for the finals which will be on knockout basis, until two finalists are eventually produced. the winner takes the trophy and will represent the country in the African winners cup competition.
The finals of this competition is usually played to mark the end of the football session n the country.
